Director Nalubega Fausta holds a neighbour in a banana garden behind the house. Two boys wait on white chairs. Guidance is not always words. Sometimes it is a back, held, until the person can stand again.

Girls in uniform hold up new black school shoes on the Mercy School tiles. A child who walks to class barefoot is not lazy. She is waiting for a pair. This is that morning.
The founder
She sold fruit on this road. Then she built a house of mercy.
After her father died in 2000, Nalubega Fausta spent a decade on the street with baskets of bananas and tomatoes. A parish priest paid her school fees. In 2013, still a university student, she founded Mercy For Life Africa in Makindye — sending most of her Ministry of Water salary into the ghetto.
