A fever in Makindye can become a funeral when there is no money for a consultation, a test, or a night on a ward. Our medical ministry does not announce itself with a ribbon. It picks a child up.
This season the photographs are a boy in an orange shirt asleep on oxygen, infants on the ward with monitor pads, a small chest after a surgeon’s work, a toddler sitting up in hospital pyjamas and grinning. There is also the slower afterwards: a Mercy School shirt over a healing scar, stitches across a brow, a child who is still here. We take the sick to hospital and we stay until the bill and the night are both met.
We do not use these photographs as spectacle. The rawer frames stay behind a care-gate. They are a record that someone came, and paid, and waited. The child and the bill are both the work.
